Design Re-Thinking on Media Fragmentation
In the contemporary era of accelerated digitization, the explosive growth of information and rapid development of digital products have led to a society that is busier and more complex, deepening the disconnect between individuals. Particularly in the field of design education, despite the increasing richness of tools and information, values continue to evolve, yet the younger generation faces growing confusion, anxiety, and uncertainty. Linguistic expressions associated with a sense of powerlessness in popular culture, such as "lying flat," "no longer willing to strive," "I am just worthless," reflect underlying social and psychological issues. According to KFF's analysis of the Census Bureau's Pulse Survey, in 2023, half (50%) of young adults aged 18 to 24 reported symptoms of anxiety and depression, highlighting significant mental health issues among young people in the digital age.
Therefore, the "Design Re-Thinking on Media Fragmentation" conference seeks to explore a core issue: how to clearly perceive the big picture in the sea of fragmentation, in order to systematically transform these fragments into buoys that can support us and even build ships, thus forging ahead in this rapidly changing sea. This is not only a challenge for designers but also a profound reflection on the entire field of design, demanding a re-examination of the role and value of design, and exploring how design can promote understanding and resonance, ultimately establishing a more connected and meaningful society.
This conference will bring together thoughts and explorations from various fields, discussing how design can serve as a navigator through the ocean of information, seeking direction and meaning. Through deep reflection and exchange, we hope to uncover the infinite possibilities of design in connecting people, promoting social progress, not only providing solutions to problems but also becoming a force that guides us towards a brighter future.

Pictoral

Pictorials:Pictorial papers are those where visual elements (such as diagrams, sketches, illustrations, computer-generated images, photographs, annotated images, and collages) play a central role in conveying the ideas and contributions of the research, alongside any accompanying text. These papers enhance the power of visual communication through effective use of visual language and high-quality images. Pictorial papers may be practical, theoretical, or a combination of both.
Through pictorial papers, we encourage researchers and students from various fields and disciplines, including media/interaction design, industrial/product design, fashion design, architectural design, and artistic creation, to express and present their design practices and projects in a rich visual format. The aim of a pictorial paper is to contribute to knowledge, rather than merely documenting concepts, methods, and processes. Visual elements themselves can serve as a form of presentation that contributes to design knowledge; they can also be accompanied by textual narratives that help the audience understand the knowledge contributions. This mutually supportive framework transforms visual elements into research and ensures they are recognized as a legitimate argument within the research discourse. In this category, textual narratives should serve as a scaffold that supports the contributions of the visual content.
